30 June 2015 (Tuesday)

Dear children,

We spent our time together working on more questions related to angles. Almost all of you are, by now, experts in identifying whether an angle is a right angle, smaller than a right angle or greater than a right angle. This is a very important skill. Do you remember the two names given to the two kinds of angles you learnt?

After mastering that, we moved on to draw shapes with different number of sides and angles. This was quite challenging for many of you, but I could see how your faces lit up when you conquered those problems one by one. Seeing you succeed brings joy to me! I was especially impressed by those who did not give up and kept trying even after many failures. People who persevere will go very far.

If you have time tonight, try drawing the following shapes:

1) A shape with 5 sides and 3 right angles
2) A shape with 6 sides and 1 right angle
3) A shape with 4 sides and 2 angles greater than a right angle
4) A shape with 7 sides, 2 right angles, and an angle greater than a right angle

We ended the day by working on a few 4-step word problems that required you to draw diagrams. We will continue with these tomorrow to complete the Angles booklet.

If you are interested to learn a little more about angles, visit this webpage:

Some of the facts on that website are not within your syllabus for this year, but who says you cannot learn more on your own? ;)

Have an enjoyable evening with your family. See you tomorrow! :)

29 June 2015 (Monday)

Dear children,

Welcome back to school! :)

It was nice hearing you share with your friends about your holidays. I am sure all of you had a good break and enjoyed yourselves. It is now time for us to do what we have to do, and to excel at it! Learning -- that is what I am referring to! :)

Did you enjoy the short story "The Pelanduk" which we read during English lesson? I did! What did you like most about the story? Write a comment on this post and let me know. :)

We learnt some new vocabulary from "The Pelanduk" and practised our summarising skills as we annotated some key parts of the story. We also worked on two exercises based on the story -- one involving punctuation in direct speech and another on the comparison of adjectives. It's not the first time we worked on those areas, so those exercises serve more as practice and revision. Do you still remember the differences between comparatives and superlatives?

We will continue to explore more of "The Pelanduk" over this week and the next.

During Math lesson, we continued on the topic which we were on before we started preparing for SA2 in May -- Angles. Your written work back then showed me that quite a number of you were not yet experts in identifying angles and right angles, so we spent quite a bit of time working on that. I hope you are now more confident and accurate in identifying those angles. Over the next few days, we will continue to help you excel in this unit before moving on to the topic of Parallel & Perpendicular Lines.

Here are a few reminders:

1) You would have received your new timetable today. Remember to refer to it when packing your bag. Yes, pack your own bag!

2) You would have received your seeds, pot, and your potting mix from National Parks. Start growing the seeds latest by Wednesday. I will brief you more about how you will record your plant's growth on Wednesday.

3) I have extended the deadline for your June holiday homework to tomorrow. This will be the only extension. All submissions are to be in by tomorrow.

4) Remember to check your handbook for the other instructions that you have taken down.

Have a pleasant evening with your family. See you tomorrow! :)
