10 July 2015 (Friday)

Dear children,

We started off today by discussing the plot of "The Pelanduk" and learning about the importance of adjectives in folktales. Working in pairs on TitanPad, you practised identifying adjectives used throughout "The Pelanduk". Many groups were very efficient while working on this exercise -- something which could only be achieved when we are focused. Most of you were also able to point out correctly the nouns which the adjectives serve to describe.

After the exercise, you worked with your partner to come up with some ideas to write an introductory paragraph for your own folktale. That took us quite some time, but I was glad to see that many of you enjoyed yourselves applying the adjectives you came up with.

Right after that, we continued with our first spelling test for the term. I have marked the spelling books from three groups so far and have found only one Super Speller! Let's hope there will be more. You will find out if you are one on Monday. ;)

Our short Science period was spent discussing the life cycle of stars (which Shineta shared with us) and the life cycle of butterflies.  As we moved on to Maths, you learnt to recognise and name equivalent fractions. Test yourself with the following questions and find the answers at the bottom of this post (you can draw circles and shade equal parts in them to help you):

1) How many quarters do I need to make half?
2) How many tenths do I need to make half?
3) How many twelfths do I need to make half?
4) How many ninths do I need to make one-third?
5) How many twelfths do I need to make one-quarter?

During SDP, you learnt to use Storybird to write your own online picture book. Because of the unexpectedly slow Internet connection in the afternoon, most of you did not manage to complete your story as planned. Beyond the frustration we faced as a class, I think being patient was one lesson we could all learn from this afternoon's wait.

Over this weekend, log on to Storybird on your own and complete your story as homework. Refer to the slip of paper given to you for your username and password.

Have a fabulous weekend with your family. See you on Monday! :)
